Why a subscription?

After hearing horror stories from many font tool makers about a lack of financial sustainability, I knew from the outset that Font Proofer needed to try something new. Here are the top 5 reasons a subscription was best for this project:

A subscription acknowledges the ongoing value that the tool provides—especially with how important proofing is throughout the type design process.
A subscription accounts for the (often implicit) expectations of ongoing improvements, fixes, training resources, and support.
A subscription incentivizes frequent improvements. Font Proofer has an ambitious feature roadmap and you shouldn’t have to wait for major paid upgrades every few years.
A subscription makes something accessible to more people. A single large payment (ex: $300-$500) is a serious decision for most designers, and out of reach for others. If you only need Font Proofer for a few months—perhaps for a class or a client project—then you only need to pay for that time.
A subscription is more financially sustainable for projects serving a small industry. Too many font production tools end up abandoned. My hope is that this pricing model will allow Font Proofer to be a reliable resource for our small community for many years to come—supported by the individuals and foundries who it helps to make great type.
