This feature relates to proofing multiple fonts. Currently, there are 2 ways to do that:
This “Interleave” feature would be like exporting separate PDFs, but then combining them into one PDF.
There are a few ways that the PDF pages could be ordered… Let’s imagine we’re proofing a Regular font style and a Bold font style:
In many situations, the most desireable option is Interleave Pages.
But what if the content of the first page of the Regular proof is different from that of the Bold proof? Most font styles have different glyph widths, so it’s likely that the content will break to new pages differently (ex: 3 paragraphs of Regular text fit on a page, but only 2.5 paragraphs of Bold fit on a page). The ideal solution is to ensure that each proof page has the same content for each font style (ex: the Regular page should only have 2.5 paragraphs, to match the Bold page’s content).
This “smart” behavior is what most designers would expect from an Interleave Pages feature. It will be more complicated to build, but it is technically possible and I would like to build it.
It’s also common to want this behavior for one or two sections in a proof, but not for other sections. That kind of section-specific control could be possible via other features I’ve imagined—but I’ll need to hear that more people care about it.
